Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve Trip

Hunting is among one of the rarest sports and tourist activities in Nepal. So far the country has only one hunting reserve: Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, which was established in 1987. Located in the Rumuk, Myagdi, and Baglund district and covering an impressing area of 1,325 sq km, the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve is governed by the Department of National Parks Wildlife Conservation.

The hunting reserve is divided into the following hunting blocks:

The Southern Hunting Block:

1. Falguna (bluesheep and Himalayan tahr)
2. Barse (bluesheep)
3. Gustang (bluesheep and Himalayan tahr)
4. Surtibang (bluesheep and Himalayan tahr)

The Northern Hunting Block:

1. Seng (bluesheep and Himalayan tahr)
2. Dogadi (bluesheep and Himalayan tahr)
3. Sundaha (bluesheep and Himalayan tahr)

The Dhaulagiri range makes for an impressive background. Mt. Dhaulagiri, Gurja Himala, Dhumpus Peak, Churen Himal, and Putha Himal are some of the mountains of the Dhaulagiri range. The animals found found in this region are as follow: deer, leopard, goral, himalayan black bear, tahr, bluesheep, etc. But only a handful of animals are permitted to be hunted by the government. The reserve is also home to some of endangered animals such as musk deer, wolf, red panda, and danphe. The reserve consists mostly of forests covered with pine, birches, juniper, oak, rhododendron, fir, and spruce. You may also encounter some hemlock.

The month of March up to May is generally considered the best for doing this trip. This is also the season when it is the most ideal time to visit Nepal since it is spring season and the weather is likely to be just right. Also the skies will be clear most of the day, giving you plenty of opportunities to grab breathtaking views the faraway mountain ranges.

The expansive forests filled with animals and plants, the challenging plains, rock, and hills of the highlands as well as the beautiful backdrop of the Himalayas make hunting in Nepal one of the finest experiences in the world.
