Located around 5 kilometer away from center of Kathmandu valley Swayambhunath Stupa is considered the one of the most holy site in the Buddhist religion. Also one of UNESCO World Heritage Site inside Kathmandu valley it’s believed to be more than 2000 years old. According to local mythology the whole Kathmandu valley was once an enormous lake in which a great lotus bloomed in the exact location on the Stupa. The valley came to be known as Swayambhu meaning Self-Created. The name came to the stupa as it’s believe that it conceals an eternal self-existent flame (Svyambhu). It believed that Manjushree the bodhisattva of wisdom and learning had a vison of the lotus at the swayambhu and traveled to the valley to worship it. Upon seeing the valley he believed that it will be a great settlement and wanted to make the great lotus accessible to all human pilgrims so it’s believe that he used his power and cut a gorge at Chovar Hill in one sweep of his sword to drain the valley of all the water. Upon draining of the water the lotus transformed into a hill and the flower become the Swayambhunath stupa. There are many myths and legend about the Stupa but it’s a revered fact among the people of Nepal that is among the oldest and most holy religious sites in both Buddhist and Hindu religion. The Stupa which is the main structure of the Swayambhunath stupa is composed of a solid hemisphere of brick and clay supporting a lofty conical spire capped by a pinnacle of copper gilt. Painted on the four sided base of the spire are the all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. This hill is a mosaic of small Chaityas and Pagoda temples and is one of the best view point inside of the Kathmandu valley. The Stupa gained its popular name the monkey temple due to abundance of holy monkey living in the forest surrounding the stupa. We would recommend it as a must to go place for all travelers visiting Nepal.
