Kichu Lhakhang: One of the holiest and oldest
temples built in 641 A.D by a religious king of
Tibet, Chhoegyal Songtsen Gambo. He built 108
temples throughout his kingdom by means of his
divine powers. Two of these temples, Kichu

exist today within the border of Bhutan. It is
from this time period Bhutan started practising
Buddhism.

in 1421 by a famous Tibetan lama, Thangtong
Gyalpo (discoverer of iron). Inside the temple
is one of the most extraoridinary collections of
paintings in Bhutan.
The lama came to Bhutan in search of iron ore
and built eight bridges, thereafter returned to
Tibet. On the same time in Paro, a demon was
terrorizing the valley and these very hills
turned out to be her head. Thang Thong Gyelpo
built a temple in the form of a Chorten to
overpower her, as Chorten plays the part of of a
nail, which immobilizes a demon at the same time
as proclaiming the victory of Buddhism.
